A doctor’s referral or requisition form is required for most imaging services at Halton Healthcare. Eligible patients can self-refer for screening services under the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP).
Yes, services at Halton Healthcare are covered under OHIP. In cases where a patient does not have a valid Ontario health card, services must be paid for by the patient.

In an X-ray, a low-dose beam of electromagnetic radiation passes through your body. As it travels, the ray is absorbed by the structures it encounters, depending on the density of the tissue. The remaining non-absorbed ray is captured as visible light to create images.
In an ultrasound, high-frequency sound waves are generated by a hand-held device called a transducer. Those sound waves rebound off organs and tissues, creating echoes that are compiled into real-time images.
X-rays are better at capturing defined images of the hard structures of the skeletal system, while ultrasounds typically provide clearer images of soft tissues, and are preferred for imaging during pregnancy.
